ABOUT THIS EPISODE

After more than two years without dropping a single, Lizzo is back and better than ever with the release of “Rumors” featuring Cardi B.

In episode 23 of the Spout Podcast, Lizzo spouts off about how she stays strong in the face of adversity, her unrelenting crush on actor Chris Evans, a possible collaboration with Harry Styles, and how she uses social media to laugh at all the rumors.

...many of us turned to music to process our emotions. And sometimes there are artists who come on the scene whose lyrics read like a page from our own lives. Whether it's processing the feelings of a rough breakup or reminding you who the hell you are. And sometimes it's a special artists that empowers you to just feel good as hell and do your job, monday baby. How you doing Over the past few years, Lizzo has come onto the scene and solidified her spot as a bona fide superstar from number one on the billboard charts to her grammy award winds to Time magazine naming her entertainer of the year lizards. Meteoric rise has been undeniable, but it's not just her catchy music that has caught the public's attention, Lizzo has been very vocal about body positivity and in an industry that usually amplifies smaller figured personas. She has inspired millions to love themselves no matter their size and my, oh that I'm not here, getting blue blame me All the boots got to blame me. Lizzo has also managed to understand the power of social media in a way few other artists have her Tiktok show off her sense of humor and like the majority of the population, she has a crush on Captain America actor chris Evans. But unlike the majority of the population, she has chris Evans responding to her D. M. S, which Lizzo graciously and hilariously shares with her fans what and greater, they gotta be great. Don't catch me tell it straight to my face. Lizzo isn't just a supreme talent. She's funny, she's self deprecating and she's relatable, well relatable minus all the accolades. But one thing that is for sure, Lizzo is special and she is 100% that come, hey, I'm doing the things. So what they do, my name is to Madea, this is this about podcast where famous people spout off about more than what they're famous for and today, that's lizzo Rizzo in the house. What's up girl already asked you how we're going to go on the record and...

...let people know that you are doing good, right? I'm doing good. You let the people know for me girl been over two years since you dropped a single and you're coming out the gate strong with the release of rumors featuring Cardi B and I got to tell you this is one of those songs when you hear on the first listen and you think to yourself like, oh snap, this is a hit. So tell me about For real For real. So you know, tell me about the track and have a collaboration with Cardi B came around, first of all, thank you. Uh the track was produced by Ricky Reed and you know, we did good as hell and truth hurts together in jews. So you know that's it's my studio boyfriend. Um the song was like unassuming at first, it was a little rock song that we made one night and it was real hard. It was like, yeah, the rule was not true and I was like, I was just a weird song, whatever, let's just keep going and I was playing it for people and they were like, this is crazy, this is really crazy. And so as I was listening to it, I was like, I've always wanted to work with Cardi B and we've always wanted to be on a song together and I noticed that Cardi B, she goes through the same stuff I go through and was like, you know what, that's the perfect person to join forces with me on this song. So we called her up, she listened to the track. She loved it. And next thing, you know, we got a hit baby. I love it. And I know you guys were on the Hustlers together. Was that a conversation that you had on set that you guys wanted to work together? Eventually? Oh no, we was working. Um, we were both in character on hustlers, but every time we see each other, it's always love like every single time. So I knew it was a matter of time. We just didn't want to rush it. We wanted to make it just right. And I'm glad we did. Yes, you did. And I gotta say you really understand the art of the perfect promo because prior to releasing rumors, you started your own rumor that you were pregnant with chris Evans baby, which congratulations by...

...the way. I did not start that rumor, but I did, I did. I turned it up a little. I turned it up a notch. Someone else said it and I turned it up a notch, poured some gasoline on the fire, right? Or did um, well when I first met you, it was actually at the red carpet for the MTV movie awards in 2019 and you had just tweeted chris for the first time on twitter, kind of shooting your shot to him. And I asked you, yeah. And I asked you and I was like, yo, did he respond? And you looked at me and you're like, girl, no, it's chris Evans. So now we're fast forwarding to 2021 where you're having a fake baby with him and he's all up in your D. M. S. So I had to know, did you ever think of getting to this point? I'm literally shook because I did not remember until now that that happened. What did I say? I mean, you basically were like, no, it's chris Evans you weren't expecting a response. No, but when did I tweet at him? And I daresay he probably thinks I'm so crazy. No, I didn't think it would ever get this far. Holy that means that there's something real. Maybe this is like, you know, are like story of our love, like when we get married. I'm just kidding. I'm just getting chris is like very cool. I'm so glad he has a great sense of humor because anyone else probably would have been so annoyed by me by now. Um, the fact that I keep making Tiktok lies about it. So everybody like, damn, Okay. They know. Um, but you know, this is, this is incredible. He and my d m's, he is all up in your Diaz. Have you guys met in person yet? No, I mean this all kind of started during the pandemic and we just all want to make sure we're being safe. But he did say he would come to a show. So fingers crossed. All right, well we already know that we got to put that on because we're following this love story. Oh God, Like killing what an incredible way to promote rumors. I mean, are you just innately savvy at marketing? No, I mean, I don't think so. I was kind of like, what am I...

...going to do? Like I didn't really know how to promote it. I kind of felt like, you know, I'll just put it out there and then if people like it, they like it. But I think what really sparked it was just like hearing this rumor that I like stage dives and I like killed somebody and I was like, I'm so sick of this. I'm so sick of this rumor. And I think things just kind of spiraled out of control for me. It happens in the moment. I just had the idea to do it and I just do it. like I don't really calculate or have or like plan for things they just happen. I love that you put them on Tiktok because even with the stage diving thing you always poke fun at it and you have such a great sense of humor about everything And I know you have like I saw your takes like 500 drafts. So at what point you decide to actually, you know press send and let the world see what you're, you're working on on social media. I just feel like nobody wants to see what I have in those drafts. They begged me for a draft, I gave them a draft and now everyone was like put it back, put it back. So for me it's like when I make drafts, I make a lot of tech stocks that are just funny to me and I just leave them in there. A lot of them are like duets because I'll be on my F. Y. P. And somebody will say something or there'll be one, it's like okay. Um when I just looked at just now a draft I had, it was like okay, I can make you yawn and I was like alright, let me see if he can make me on and I'll film it and just do it like and I never posted. That's how fun Tiktok is for me. Like I feel like I could spend hours on it. This episode of the spell podcast is brought to you by better help. That it's not even that crazy to me anymore. But I still feel like I want to start this rumor. So I'm gonna let you know There's a rumor that my ass is insured for $1 million. I love that. I feel like it should be ensured they are Okay. $5, $5 million. Okay. You gotta put the price up. Let's say five million christ went up, baby. Speaking of rumors, you not only landed captain America, but essentially captain Britain as well. Harry styles. So how is twitter's favorite music friendship doing? Oh, um Harry is so cool man. He's such a cool guy. Like seriously? Every, we're fine. I just talked to him the other day. Um, he's so busy and so am I, I want to...

...work with him. He's on my list of people to collaborate with. But everyone's like, I know his, oh was coming. There's nothing set in stone. There's no song yet. And I think just like with Cardi, like I don't like rushing anything. I like to work on the relationship, you know, first and me and him have the best relationship. So it's like, you know, if the right song comes along, maybe we'll do it. Maybe we won't? Well, I love that, potentially it's on the table because we are all, you know, amping for it. So, I know we were talking about dropping your first single after a few years and we were talking about Tiktok and I saw your tick talk about the album. So I have to ask, what can you tell us about an album? That's right out. Okay, here's the thing. I wish that I had an album and I was being all secretive and like Beyonce, like I'm not Beyonce, like I don't have an album. I have tons of songs like I've written songs about from A to Z about every topic, Everything that's been on my mind. But I think for me, I just want to make sure that the songs make sense together. So I'm an album artist. So I'm not just gonna drop a single and disappear. You know, I definitely am in y'all spaces forever at this point. But so an album is coming, but I just got to make sure that it's right. So I see some Grammys behind you and there they are. I love it amongst many other awards. So yes, you should definitely very proud of that. So three Grammys, a platinum record, you're the first woman ever to headline Bonnaroo, which is coming up. So you have all these incredible accolades, millions of followers, you know, all of us chomping at the bit for music from you. I wonder what is there left for you to do? And then like if we were in the time machine and go forward five years, where do you see yourself?...

Oh, there's so much more to do because my, my goals have never been about external accolades, like external praise, like Grammys and Awards are great and they are extremely unexpected and there are cherry on top. My goals have been about the music and about my impact as an artist and as a human being. So there's so much more to do to expand my reach. Like in helping people, like my music helps people, the live show helps people. I have a deal with amazon um, studios so I can create content, you know, and tell stories that need to be told and share um with the world. I, I want to expand my empire into other places. You know, like fashion and you know, anywhere there is a need for representation. I'll be there. Are we going to maybe see you on the screen again? Um there's nothing like, yeah, you're gonna see me on the screen. I don't know if it's gonna be a silver one, but I'll definitely be on the screen. I mean we saw your chops and hustlers. So I would love to see you in more films. Is that something that you're, you mean chops? You mean my ass in my thighs clapping then. Yes, I feel like that was so easy to do because it was just be yourself. You know, I think actually being a character and, and and bringing that character alive is a craft that I respect. Um I have too much respect for it to just take any movie role. Like, you know, of course there's been offers, but we're very careful about choosing the right role so that we are honoring the story as much as I'm honoring my journey as an actor. You are so much in the forefront of body positivity and...

...because you are on the internet, there's so many people that support you, but I'm sure you hear the other side of it as well. How do you remain true to who you are in the face of so much noise? I think the key is realizing that is noise. I think I'm super aware. It is, it's hard to do. It's very hard to do. And I think like it takes a lot of time and work and in pain and going through it to be able to identify the noise for what it is and to compartmentalize, you know, your piece from, from the chaos. Um, but I like to have a small circle of friends. I like to stay in my little bubble in my house and I like to do things that make me happy like cook and dance. And I think that's what it's all about, right in the end. Yeah, thank you so much. Congratulations on rumors and on your baby with chris Evans. Oh God, thank you.
