Little Big Town

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

While most people see the excitement of Country Music stardom, few can personally understand the trials and tribulations that litter the path of stardom better than Little Big Town. The multiple Grammy, Emmy, and Billboard award winners sit down with us for a fun and entertaining conversation with host Josh 'Bru' Brubaker.

The Country quartet spouts off on Fashion Week, male rompers, Marvel movies, their beef with Susan Sarandon, why they don't have a lead singer, tour bus tales with Miranda Lambert and The Eagles, what they love about autumn, and their affinity for previous Spout guest Harry Styles!

Karen, Kimberly, Phillip, and Jimi are an infectious group that even non-Country fans might fall in love with after hearing this episode.

While most people see the excitement of country music stardom, if you understand the trials and tribulations that litter the path before artists are standing on stage accepting their country music awards, or, in this particular case, multiple grammy, Emmy and billboard awards as well. Grammy goes to go crush and while most people would pack it up and leave after dropping a critically pan debut album that got them dropped from their label, this act went to the studio and got right back to work. Their second album had a much warmer reception and even spawned their smash hit single boondocks, with the music genre so deeply rooted in us his tree. It's rare when a country act steps on the scene and becomes a game changer. With no lead singer, little big town features exceptional and stunning four part harmonies in their music. That sets them apart from the mainstream. Starting with two members in and shooting to superstartom with four, little big town has truly cemented themselves as one of country's greatest acts. I'll just twish you and I'll just wish you. This is the spout podcast, where famous people spout off about more than what they're famous for, and today that's a little big town. Here's Joshua Brew, Brew Baker. Oh my gosh, I feel like I've entered the shark tank and I have no ideas to pitch. A little big town. Are you guys doing? That's great, God, how are you? Thank you so much for for yourself, however,...

...no, it was great. Um, a little big town here, obviously, Karen, Kimberly, Philip, Jimmy, how are you guys doing? Fantastic, man, absolutely well. It's so good to see you and talk to really like the soundtrack of summer. You know, you guys have such like core memories that so many people's lives. So I want to hear how your guys of Summers have been like. You've been on the road, a lot of work professionally, but if you enjoyed it, like personally getting some time for yourselves? Yes, yeah, yeah, I mean we've been really busy. You know, summer is the usually the busiest time of the year for us and UH, but we've had incredible summer. That started with Miranda. We ended up in Europe with the Eagles for a while and but in the middle of that too, we got to take some family vacations over uh in Europe and um saw the rolling stones at Hyde Park. It was pretty epic. I mean it's it's been great. I hope fall is gonna go well. It's such a huge disappointment. Skin's not well. The pumplkin spices back and everywhere. You need the Pumpkin spice. I'm I'm into it, but I gotta be honest, since I had covid, I can't stand the smell, but I like the taste, but I'm so turned off by the smell. But I used to crave it. Yeah, pump pumpkin spice, it's too sweet for me. Yeah, but that Pumpkin light. Yeah, that's crazy because you hear about that where it would like change your smell and it would it smell like different or it's just bad. Oh, listen, I hate to be too personal, but I had covid last August, like twenty one August, and I still have six things that smell exactly the same. You don't want to know, but it's also a smell I never smelled before. So there's six things in my life and my daughter's laugh that's still...

...that smell exactly the same. But it's a smell we've never smelled before. That is good and Pumpkins. That's hard to comprehend. Something smell like something you've never smelled before. Something smell like something you would know. You're like, I've never smelled that smell, new smell, and I keep waiting for things to turn to their real smells. Even I'm looking forward to gross things actually turn into their actual smells. It's not happening. Yes, wouldn't that be cool if it like reversed it for you, like you're in the bathroom and it smells great everything I do. I think there's some kind of like therapy going on now where you smell really strong things to try to get it back. I'm in. I bought all the olds and I did it for about two days. Is Oil. I don't know if it changes your accents to that happens since covid as well. It's so weird crazy. I got a British accent ever, said I got sick, something like that. You guys look great. I know you are just all over the place and so busy, but you guys look fantastic. Um, I'm going to New York for like Fashion Week tomorrow. You guys have any advice on how to look like guys, but from a guy's perspective, I feel like you guys might know something ladies dressing. As a guy, I have no sense of that. Any advice. Whatever it is you wear, you just got to own it, you know, just just own it, just being comfortable with your own skin. You can be adventurous too. With fashion week right someone like prank gift to me a Romper, one of those male Rompers I'm afraid of, like not being able to go to the bathroom anywhere, but it's pretty forward. You look better than Harry styles. I mean careful what many people around the world would say. They are die hard little big town fans. There is a certain artist that little big town themselves are fans of, none other than Harry styles. Have you seen all that stuff going on with Harry...

Right now? Yes, no, I have. I have, but I don't understand it. What is it? I mean? Do you think I didn't see the clip but I read about it? Yeah, but I'm a Harry Fan, so all the way. I mean and I'm Harry absolutely that's he didn't on any records I've heard in the past year. We're talking about. I don't know what this spit gate is, but Harry didn't do it. That's all you need to know. That's all you need to know. You okay. So fashion advice. I do think you should go with the Romper and layer it with just like, you know, your favorite blazer. I would wear a shirt under the Ropper, I think. Um, what shows are you going to do? You know, just like a bunch of random ones. I'm so excited. I've never been out there. There's like some Kelvin Klein ones, which I'm really excited for. Can you know all the I don't know what. What kind of shoes would you wear with the Romper? Like combat boots, do you like? Is Their juxtamosician with rain boots, something, some timberlance like. Yeah, I don't I don't know. I'd have to see the Ropper, I'm not sure, but his stylists will just take care of him. Do you have a stylist or do you need Karen's no stylist, no style. You need you need to get Karen's number. She will look you up, I'm sure. I can't wait to see what you're gonna wear and I'm going to be watching. Um, I will be there next week as well. I'm not walking, to be fair. I'm like hosting stuff and just attending, but I'm not, like you know, not walking and picking my own outfits. That would be a tragedy. I show with like pool floatings on, like you've seen some wild stuff out there, but it'll be fine. I'm looking forward to her. It's...

...hard to imagine that anyone with decades of experience we get nervous before a show, especially when they have multiple trophies highlighting their outstanding abilities to perform. But even little, big town falls victim to their nerves sometimes. Do you guys get nervous for anything? Like you had to hold so many gigs, whether it's like hosting, you know, the e C M C M A S Um, you're doing the New Year's live, which is going to be in front of like the country, still get you nervous? Everything gets me nervous. Everything I'm on a on a level. I'm a tin and everyone else's way down from the tin, but I'm the most nervous and hyperactive of the band. You know, what makes me the most nervous is live TV. Yes, uh, like you know, when you're doing award shows, like you like singing live on the grammys or even late night TV sometimes. I don't know. There's something about that, the countdown to the you know you've got three minutes to play your song, and it's all this build up all day, all day, all day, and it's like go that is nerve wracking me. We sang girl crushed on the grammy's four years ago, five years ago. All, yeah, tea, I want a ship in a Battlem of Phil I long, I want yeah, cousin me, you want me just stays. But I didn't have a mic. Didn't have a MIC, didn't have a mic, and I kept telling they all had their mics and I kept telling the production guy was a commercial break and they were running don't have a mic. Hey, I'm singing the Solo. I don't have a mic. And finally it was like they were counting down and I was...

...like, I don't have a mic, like I need a microphone, you know. And then now my heart's racing because I didn't have a mic and they're like and I was supposed to turn around and there's like you know that last five, four, three, and then you're trying to calm your breath. Oh my God. You know, and I saw Carson dalely talking about this, that he people think that he's just calm on the voice, but when they're live he's like, if you look at my hand, I'm like clenching my leg like a nervous wreck. And I put a picture up of me on the voice, you know, a popular TV show in NBC where millions of People Watch and you see me. I'm the host and I'm smiling, I got my TV face on and and I had my right hand in my pocket, and that's the picture that I put up and what I wrote was that what people don't know, and this is part of that. Like you think you know, but you don't know what someone's going through. I said, you think my right hand in my pocket, you know, with just being casual because I'm on TV and my life looks so great. That truth is in that moment I was gripping the flash of my upper right thigh because a wave of panic in that moment was coming through me and I was so scared I wanted to run off the stage, because it's one of the symptoms of panic. I can't control my nervous system. Fight or fight kicks in. The threat is the threat is real, but there's nothing there, UM, and so I have to just ride that way. On live TV he seems so completely put together, but you can't. It's just human nature, you know. I I get the most nervous if we're not prepared. If we feel prepared, then I feel like decently okay, but when there's but if we've crammed at the last year, which, yeah, that's nerve wracking. Would you prep it all for these interview type of deals? Like, you know, obviously do vocal warm ups, I'm sure for performances. Do you do anything for like interviews? Does it sound like we do, like we prepared? We sound know we're. We should. I mean sometimes...

...we I'm trying to think if we ever prepared for an interview. I don't think so. I don't think so. I think I think you can go back and watch and verify that now. I do feel for you, though, because you're gonna be with Um, howity twitty fashion people, and so if you're doing all those fashion interviews, you have to do you kind of have to do your homework, and they're not they're not very there's not a lot of grace. They're not as charming as we are. I know you guys, it's like I said all your names wrong. You guys are so sweet. But like on that stuff there's always the cheat code where you could just be like, who are you wearing, because I would never be able to tell from a body be like that is this brand, you know? So uh, there's always a little bit of a cheat. Covidt that, but definitely preparation always helps. Making even one studio album is a major accomplishment. But little big town is set to drop their tenth with the release of Mr Sun Go. Yeah, guys were so excited. Mr Son is coming out so soon, the sixteen, and I loved the center of this whole album. You know, a collective hope is what you guys mentioned, that brighter days are ahead for all of us, and I love that. I think the world needs you know that more than ever. What's something that's giving you guys hope right now? The live shows so good to feel together with people. People are just excited to hear live music and be together, and that's so fun. For me it's beautiful. Yeah, I would say that that's a great answer. I just remember the first show back coming out of all that was one of the most exhilarating shows we played and it was just that pent up and energy from the row that hadn't been to a live showing...

...a long time and for us not having been in front of a crowd and a long time. It's it's the best we've been having a blasphem back out. It's always curious to think about what happens behind the curtain when artists go on the road with other big name acts. For a little big town who has shared the stage with many greats, it really depends because they are such great fans of their peers. When you guys are out on the road, like you mentioned, it's Miranda Lambert, you're out with the eagles. Does the experience change? The atmosphere not, not so much the performance. I know you guys have that nailed down, but like backstage you're hanging out with them, is it always the same vibe because you guys are together, or does it kind of depend on the artists that you're on the road with? The same but it changes sometimes. I mean that's just they we're laughing because it's the polar opposite like and there's nothing wrong with it. It's just that one is more fun. Like Miranda's just crazy like us, you know, like crazy in a good way, and we were out there and we've we've known her forever, you know. Um, the eagles, it's more of like we were intimidated and we need to behave and and a lot more. We want to honor their process and they're they're used to a certain thing and so were. We were just trying to like obey the rules and they're sober and we're not. Oh Man, if you get here with the Eagles for a minute, you're like who we play with? A dreams so great and they were so kind to us. Um, but you know, there we're just there's still a carefulness that we all, because of what we do for a living, have to be with, with covid restrictions and Um, you know, we've got our kids running around everywhere and Um, so snotty nose...

...kids, but yeah, but with Miranda it's like, you know, we might end up in a pool all day long, like before the show and or write a song or I don't, I don't know. It's it's she's used to our snotty nose kids and yeah, it's it feels like family. So we are always the same, but we do need to adapt and honor, you know, the people that. Yeah, yes, we figured that out. The beauty of little big town is that there are predominantly four part harmonies with no real lead singer. But every once in a while, one of them we'll take center stage. I'll just listening to before you guys hopped onto better love. I love this song so much and Karen, you took the lead on it. Next. I feel like you probably answered this a million times, but when it comes to the lead of a song, what is that feeling out process like when he comes down to the side and who's who's taking the reins on it? Well, if it's something Sassy, yeah, I mean sometimes that one I was a part I wrote. So, Um, I was a part of writing, so it kind of felt like it was a me thing, you know, but it changes. I mean we've we've had songs in the past where we've all been in the room writing and we've all tried it and honestly left it on the floor too, in the cutting room floor, because it didn't feel right for any of us. So sometimes we were like finding things for each other. Sometimes we're writing specific things. Sometimes it was written in a key that just fits someone's voice.

UH, there's no really like rhyme or reason. It just happens. But if it's a kind of a mean spirited, Sassy song, it's usually mean. The boot fits my name. My name is Karen, if the boot fits it. So how many? How many versions of a song are out like where someone else was singing it that you put out eventually and like you have almost all of you like, you know, trying that. That's a great idea. We've never we've actually never done that, but we should. What was the song with Wayne that Um to know love? We I think we all sang a version of that. Oh yeah, that's right, in a different key. Trying to figure out what the best key was. It would be interesting to go back and you should hear these boys sing girl crush, Oh man, not Harry, not after Harry, singing after Harry did can't do it. We have so many great songwriters on this new album that's coming out the sixteenth. When you guys are in the writing room, have you noticed that, like over time, does it get easier, I guess, technically or is it always based on like a season of life? I think it gets hard. I think, yeah, it gets more complex. Yeah, yeah, I mean, wow, I mean, I mean, I mean I think it's both. Probably go ahead, what we'RE gonna say? Well, I mean songs. I think the muscle memory of writing songs gets easier, but you start holding yourself to a higher expectation and then it gets harder and harder and harder. You know, anyone can say that. But yeah, you're like yeah, that part, that part gets harder and harder. I think if you care about it, it gets harder and harder. I mean it's songwriting is an amazing, amazing craft and I have just so much respect for people that have done it for so long and, you know, written all these iconic songs. It's just it's really a magical thing.

It really is magic process. Absolutely when you talk about high holding it to like a higher standard, you would hope that people that go on jeopardy, you know, would would know a little big towns. So I don't know if you saw that. Do you see how you're testing for Karen and Judy Um got that wrong and I guess the judge, which is like, I mean what a flattering answer. Back flattering, but two people in a band. But yeah, I mean that was a little that made me laugh. I laughed so hard. I mean I just was like, first of all, why are we a question? Question? Yeah, yeah, I get clips every now and then of I know that was funny. Anyone could be a question once, but twice, guys, come on, that means we may do we need to accomplish there. If you guys could be on any show, it could be jeopardy, game show, maybe reality guys going on Love Island. What show would you go on? Saturday night? Yeah, Saturday live. What was I going to say? Your game? Family Feud? Let's please, family, family, we would kill it. We've we've done some skits with Jimmy Fallon and we've had a blast a little big town. I'm so happy your hair rests on the new album. Thanks for doing rich Man. Tonight. I gotta see my favorite song on the album as hell. Yeah, you guys excited to be here? Yeah, today's crossword puzzles tough. Do you guys know the opposite of Heaven and a four little word that means yes, yeah, that's it perfect. Hey, you guys want to hang out after this show, I'm going to call my mom. Cool, all right, thanks, I think I'll take as it. I'll take that as a hell yeah, hell yeah. We did uh, instead of stranger things, it was called ranger strings, stranger strings, which was silly strange strings, and so if you got the question wrong, you got stringed. And then, I'm not going to Brag, but I beat...

Susan Surrandon Analoga, wood and beer palm. Oh my gosh, unbelievable. Come on, God, Oh, guys, the little and the rest of us and Jimmy Fallon put it on the tombstone. Actually, Susan Surandon said when it was down to the two of us, she said if if one of us wins, let's both win, and I went like this yeah, and she's like in my heart I was like no way. She was like give me that cup. Susan Surrandon, I got to tell her that she's on the show monarchs that's coming out about country music, and we did a little cameo on that show and I got to tell her that that's what was in my heart. I smoked you chick. She's not normally she's not normally the competitive one, but that afternoon she went and bought new, very expensive tennis shoes from like Neiman Marcus and she was dad said that she was going to win that beer pong and by George she did. I was like, if I'm wearing soon as she's on national TV and winning, that's cool. Well, we talked about Harry styles already, Um, and this is just crossing over until like a different type of UH content. What about Superhero movies? You know, Megan the stallion is going to join marvel. Now. Kim Kardashi had said she wants to be in it. I don't know what this universe looks like, but you guys were in it. I mean, does fantastic four make too much sainse or do we have to go individual? Amazing, I watched them all, so amazing. I mean, what's so Harry's going to be in one? Yeah, he's one of the like four gods which he's like a brother or something like that. Would Kim Kardashian Superhero be, though? That that's what I have a question about. Kim Kardashian. The KARADASHIANS would be like hair extensions that grew really and then like chath...

...our booties more like be honest eyelashes, eyelashes that are like bay or they're spanks, fly off of you after them and then choke you or like you into it oblivion. Skims, Jimmy, not spanks s S. sorry. It's easy and it's fun and also back on TV this weekend. So excited for football. Would you guys ever do the Super Bowl halftime show? Yeah, yeah, tough things. I feel like you can't many. It's such a good show and you have people just criticizing it, even though it's amazing. Right, nothing, now that you say that, maybe not. You know that only. Um, it's been like since nineteen eighties something that country music has had. Anyone do have time. And it was the judds Travis trip. I've never half cock caving gone. I don't unders. Don't lift this Rabbit Ron. It was a group. It was a long time ago and it was like in the heyday of when country music, I'm not that we're not ruling now, but like just like so popular, and I guess it would have been the nineties probably. Yeah, yeah, and and no country artists has been on there. They've done the anthem, but they've not done halftime show. So I don't know we have. We have done many anthems just for tickets. So you know we would be there. We've done so many anthems. We've done anthems under every possible scenario. Yes, we have every sport. You come he water, go ty, I will say...

...go type, let's go. That's so fun. Country needs to come back at that. And I love when they mixed the genres. Remember, like you could do it with Bruno Mars and beyonce and like Red Hot Chili peppers. When they combine those, that's when it's just like so much fun. So I hope to see it. I hope they send you an invite and while music is, of course, always their main point of focus, it's always important to have a little fun along the way. To your guys knowledge. has anyone ever dedicated a sandwich to you? Because like a little big town lbt, come on, they have no Philip has a dedicated Mexican dish at a very famous Mexican spot in our town called Sopapias. It's called Le Pepe and it's the shrimp, the shrimp case Idella. Yes, I'll be honestly, it sounds like the least like you dish. So random it's and shrimp and pepe. It was our bass player, Stevie. We called him fozzy. He owns the restaurant, so he named the Shrimp Kissidia after me. Yeah, he always called Philip Pipe, so he made a peppe. Okay, it's the only thing I order when I go there, because you have to. I didn't think that's a great idea. Maybe we can't get a deli somewhere to let's do that away. Bt T. I love it. The Sky Blue Vinyl, which I'm so excited for. I just started collecting vinyl a little bit ago. Um, that's coming out from Mr Sun, which is so cool. You know, people are becoming obsessed again with vinyl. You guys collect anything that we wouldn't know about. I Love Vinyl. I collect vinyl. Um, he means anything else, like salt and pepper shakers, do you? I collect bells. I'm just kidding. I was trying to think of something weird. Dishes, for real. Collect dishes? You Do? Yeah, hello, we met. He really didn't know that about her. She was like, I didn't know that you collected.

That's just coming out the WAZOO. Um, Carrie collects clothing and shoes and jewelry. That's more of anything expensive. If you are as smart and cute as we think you are, you need to get her phone number and you need her to dress you for fashion. Well, I think the designers are dressing him every day. No, he doesn't have a status. No, but they're dressing you. Right, mall flying solo on this and Um, I'll tell you what slot into your d m S. and, by the way, I hate to do this, but I have to go to my son's football absolutely I don't want to. Happy early birthday to you, by the way. It's I enjoyed the game and it was so nice catching up with you. We'll wrap this up, I mean, I'll leave you with the blonde version of the band here, but Jimmy and I have to go watch our son. He's outside Linebacker, yes, and we'll be in big trouble. Dmn about fashion. I'm dmn about the score. I want to know how it went. And thank you so much for the time. Guys. It's great catching up with you so much. You're adorable. Thank you, I appreciate it. Just wrap it up. That's great. Thank you so much, guys. Good luck everything and if we're question, all right, you guys get out of here. I'll do one more thing with more question. What you got? One more? Oh, Jimmy wants to say you want to be a part of it. I just want to know. What do you guys even think about what you want to do like after music? Is it just like life? Um, do you have anything you have your eyes on that you want to do, and is there a way to like tie it into like what you're doing now? We want to win an EGOT. That's after. That is that is kind of well, I mean we have a himmy now, we have a grammy. We have we need two more. We have two to go. We want to be in a Broadway show where we're cast as superhero like or Superhero, and then we want to win an Oscar and then we'll be and then we can die happy people. I was gonna say grow a garden. Yeah, well, that's expectation there. She's getting a grammy and you've got a bell pepper coming up for this bell. Ever, I'd like to thank round up for keeping it safe.

Oh my gosh, you guys enjoyed the game again. It was so nice to what meet you is our first time speaking. So yeah, man, really great. This is awesome. Thank you. You see on the road soon.
