Anitta

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

Not every artist has over 50 million people following their every move on Instagram, or is getting calls from Mariah Carey giving life advice. That’s partly why Billboard named Anitta as more influential than Beyonce, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga.

In episode 19, the Brazilian sensation spouts off on how she does it all: from overseeing contracts to project rollouts, marketing, and more. She also explains the importance of being open and honest with fans and answers questions about plastic surgery, her partying lifestyle, and her dating life.

...not every artist has over 50 million people following their every move on instagram or has Mariah Carey calling them to give them life advice or has billboard ranking them as more influential than Beyonce Rihanna and lady gaga and that's part of what makes Brazilian sensation Anita so special aside from her voice, her beauty and her ability to remain true to who she is in the face of potential public scrutiny. She's a savvy businesswoman at the core who managed her own career. Anita grew up singing in church, taking dancing lessons and listening to music by her idol, Mariah Carey, much like the career beginnings of another foreign born superstar Justin Bieber, Anita was discovered on Youtube after posting a cover of Priscilla No City song, Sultana record producer Hinata Azevedo known as DJ back. Latina quickly signed her and released a series of funk hits major label, soon came knocking and in 2013 Anita released her self titled debut album, Anita, which shot straight to number one. She quickly gained superstar status, even being dubbed the queen of Brazilian pop. Most artists are only tasked with making music and performing. Anita was busy behind the scenes acting as her own manager from contracts to album rollouts to building her own social media. Following, Anita wasn't just content with dominating the Brazilian market, she had her eyes set on the world. By 2018, the Multilingual superstar began charting on the US billboard charts with Downtown, featuring J balvin collaborations with Madonna, Major Lazer, Snoop Dogg Mollema and many others soon followed, but it was a 2020 smash hit Me Gusta featuring Cardi B, which really catapulted her up the music charts way as Anita continues her world domination. One thing that remains the same is her ability to keep it real with her fans, whether it's being open about plastic surgery, her partying lifestyle or calling out haters on social media, Anita has mastered the art of simply not giving enough way. My name is to media, this is the spout podcast where famous people spout off about more than what they're famous for and today, that's Anita, how are you? Wait, how do I say? How are you in Portuguese? Uh to the bank? So the bank, they say that right now with the accent on there properly. Okay, okay. We're starting off on the right foot and we'll learn a little Portuguese along the way. Um Congratulations to you on Girl from Rio featuring the baby. I mean this is not only just an incredible trap but it's the first time that you're singing a song entirely in english, which is so dope. Were you nervous about that at all or were you just ready? Oh my God. Yeah, 100%. I think there is like a pressure not from my side because nowadays I don't care anymore. I'm very relaxed but I think like my fans and my country, everybody's like, oh my gosh is saying in english, something needs to happen, you know, even more because they don't have that much this in brazil, we don't see like were there in the artist coming out and you know, having a career all tied and singing in another language. So it's like a new experience for everyone, for me, for Brazilians, for americans, for everyone. Well we love it. Are we going to see more of that on your album? Which is all of the same name, Girl from Rio, which is coming out in the fall. Exactly, yes. Uh we're gonna have a lot of, I'm not singing in Portuguese in this album, we have like some words and but mostly it's in english and spanish,...

...it's like amazing. Also the rhythms of the rhythms are like very, it's a mix of Brazilian rhythms with the rhythms that are already like huge world wild. So we're mixing like this girl from here, we mix pasta number with trap hip hop. So in this uh there's tracks like medical stuff, We mixed five, go down with a little bit of rocket on. And then there's another track that we're mixing fuck with electronic music. So people are going to kind of bill brazil somehow. We're going to have the flavor of the language. I love that weight. So do you have an actual release date set yet? I know it was kind of tentatively for the fall, but there was no date. No, I don't have I don't know, I have no idea. I had my team do it. I mean I used to be my own manager for so many years and I was taking care of everything and I was like under everything on top of everything and I was so uh stressed. And then two years ago I decided to just find the management and take care all the creative part, the creative part. So, I have no idea. I have no idea. When is it coming? How is it coming? I no clue what I know is the creative, how is it going to sound the videos? You know, I'm on top of this, not just trying to be part anymore. I chose to relax a little bit because I was like, take care of everything is very tired and I'm trying to enjoy life a little bit more. Well, good, you should be enjoying it. But I have to say that's really impressive that you are managing your own career for so many years. Well, I mean, what was that process like? I mean, not every artist does that. It was very it was very stressful. Like, I was 100% of the time, taking care of everything, the contracts, the papers of the deals and oh my God, every single thing, the strategies and talk to the label talked to. It was very tired and I mean it was okay. I did it. I was very like uh I am very perfectionist and I was very control, a very controlling person and I needed to dis attach from this control situation to understand that if I kept doing like that, taking care of everything. First of all, I wouldn't do, I wouldn't have time for myself. That's the main reason. I wouldn't have time for me to take advantage of everything that I got or to enjoy life the way I should. So I was like, okay, I'm done, I need to I need to choose what I want to do and then that's it, that's and I was like every time on the cell phone and I had no time to go out and two, it was just business, business business all day. Oh guys, you weren't able to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Yeah, exactly. And that was frustrating. I was always so like under pressure and so worried because when your life is all about something, if one little thing goes wrong with this, something that your life is all about, you go crazy, you feel like everything is falling apart and I figure out that we need to have different sides of our lives too so we can share the weight of every single thing. You know, like oh there's this work part and then love relationship part and then the friends and then the family and you know and nowadays it's a balance and yes I do work but not 24 7. So if something goes wrong and work I'm gonna be like okay next time I'll be fine and then there's the family life and love life and friends life so it's better right? Yeah. I mean it's all about balance right? And I guess we have to learn that along the way. We have to make the mistakes to learn that...

...right? Exactly. I was very like once since I was only working in my life, everything was about work and now it's not anymore good. I'm glad you're being able to enjoy it because you do seem like you are enjoying it more. We're seeing like I mean you always are smiling and you know have such a good energy but it's nice to know that like you know, you're feeling that throughout all the facets of your life, just a little bit back to the business stuff because I just think it's really admirable that you are, you know, we're able to be such a big part of like the business side of your Artistry. Um and I know I read recently that you actually do the marketing for your career. I mean how did you even know how to start that? Because that's not a small feat for someone who has managed to build 55 million followers on Instagram alone, it's crazy. Everyone asked me like how do you manage that? It's insane and how weird do your ideas come from? And I'm like, I just don't know, I'm very I have a big intuition and also I'm very, I love studying and I love trying new things, I love risking new things, I'm not afraid of losing, I'm not afraid of failing. So I think that it's good for me, helps me because if I want to try something new, I just go and try it. I'm not afraid if that's going to fail, if what people are gonna say, if I fail, I don't care about that. So I think that I just try new things and if it goes wrong, it's okay, but if it goes right, it goes super right because it's something new or something nobody has like ever seen. So that's the main secret I think, and I just started to understand like I think I'm very talented, I I can sing, I can dance, but I don't think I'm the best voice, I don't think I'm the best dancer, I don't think I'm the previous, but I think I have a little bit of everything and I'm very dedicated and I have the biggest effort ever and I'm very responsible for professional. So I think that when you put all of these things together and you just dedicate yourself and put a lot of effort on something you get there, you know? So that's how, how I try to do, like knowing my, my skills. I know that I'm very good communicating and that that's, I think that's amazing. People pay attention on me, like my personality the way I am, I'm very open. I talk about everything, I'm not afraid of anything, anyone and anything I do whatever I want to do in front of everyone. I don't care to hide myself. And I think people, this is the one thing people connect the most. So I decided to just take a lot of advantage of this side of mine, you know, that I think people connect water. So yeah, that's it. I think some people would disagree, especially your fans about some of the things you said, but it's very like humble position to take, and I think it's actually really, really smart advice is that, you know what you're good at, and that's what you lean into. Um and I think that would be great advice for anyone that's probably trying to maybe do the same thing or figure out, you know what, maybe they want to be leaning into themselves. Um and I love that you mentioned that you are so open and that's something that, you know, struck to me, especially on social media, where there's all these smoke and mirrors and you've been so open about body positivity and plastic surgery and you don't hide anything, especially in um you know, a very celebrity driven world where a lot of them are hiding so much, you're so open about that. Have you always been this open or is this something that you've kind of grown into? Oh wait, I always been like that it's crazy, and sometimes it's kind of bad for me because I can't hide things, I can't lie. And sometimes people, like, not, not only about my, the way I look my image or plastic surgery or whatever,...

...but also things that I do in my life, if I went out with someone, if I did this, if I did that, I just say it and if people ask me something, I cannot say, you can see my face is terrible, I'm like, oh my God, am I showing up that I'm like, and then I started the space and it's so bad and I don't know, it's just easier for me to be honest because I'm a very good liar, I'm a very bad liar. So it's just easier for me. Yeah, I think this brings more um it's more stressful because people judge you a lot. People have a lot of comments. People want to criticize, people want to have opinions about what you're doing, what to say. So it's kind of if you don't play the game, if you don't play like what people expect you to be and what people expect you to do, then you are open with no protection for any. I think people would say about you, so you gotta be ready and I have a lot of courage like I don't I don't actually care that much people you know like I care about if I am happy if I'm having a good time if I look at myself and I and I'm happy with that. So, I think that's my mindset and that's why I think some people, like some friends of mine, they tell me, I wish I was like, God, just don't care way. So what how do you do that? Because okay, so there's a book I read recently, it's called The subtle art of Not giving A F which basically teach, you know? So it's like that same idea of just like not giving a f what anyone thinks, and you're just going to kind of do what you feel is right in your heart and however, that makes you feel good going forward. But for people that don't, you know, like it's almost impossible to not kind of care what some people think. So how do you do that? Like, what's your advice to people that might be listening? That you can say this helps me not given f what people think. Sometimes I cut I cut myself looking at comments and checking what people are saying, their opinions. And then I started to search about these people. Okay, so this person is telling whatever about me and they click in the link and it's a fake profile. So let's think if this person doesn't have the courage to say something. And so it's so his or her her face, it means something and he's expressing is already not confident with herself. So this person is that nobody next. And sometimes like, oh, there's just one time it was very funny, I was talking about someone I I whatever, I don't care. And this first it was given or it was not me saying, but it was like, I don't know, someone figured out someone like, I don't know, I don't remember anymore, but it was someone some girls saying like shopping his things, I'll be like, you know like, oh this girl blah blah blah, he does this and that this is so not nice, she should respect. And then I went there and then I saw pictures with her boyfriend and then I went to the boyfriend. I really searched, I'm like, I'm like a detective and I went to the boyfriend and I saw the boyfriend was sending me message like a flirty feigns and I was like, yo you understand that people are not talking about you, they are talking about probably they have with themselves. And then I was just like, you know what? It doesn't actually matter because in the end of...

...the day, they are, they're living their lives and telling you, how would you, how are you supposed to live your life? But you're the one living it. So in the end of the day, what matters is if you are happy if what you're doing is making you happen doesn't matter if other people think it's good or not. So that's my mentality nowadays. I just don't care. I don't care at all. I love that. I also love that you're a savage and you went to her page and found her boyfriend was like, actually because that was making me, like, these comments weren't making me sad, I was reading things and then I was like, no, no, no, no. I got to find a way to stop. I hate losing, I like to win. And if I'm sad, I understand I'm losing, someone is winning and I'm losing, so I gotta find a way to win, you know? And then I went to research to figure out what I was like, yo you know what, I'm just gonna keep doing whatever I'm doing. And my friends, they always tell me there's like there's this one friend and she went out with me the first time because I mean the pandemic and everything we can, I met her uh join these ties but then we couldn't get out but now things are coming back. So uh we went out together and she was like yo you really live your life, you just go around, what did you do, whatever you want to do it, you get drunk on your block, block block I was lost. I mean the land it cause my friend, she always tells me I gotta call, you gotta tell me your stars. How was your weekend? Because I live my life your life. I love that dude. Honestly like that's such good energy and good vibes and you know we could all take a page from your book. So I'm gonna now that we are you know vaccinated and out in the streets again. Like get my Anita on out here. I mean in the end of the day who was going to have the filling of the let's let's suppose you went now okay and then you're very word. So what people are gonna say tomorrow tomorrow when I did uh it's better for me to just behave. So tomorrow you're not even gonna see some people you're gonna be with yourself. So it's better for you to take advantage of this this night and wake up say I had a you know it's really yeah fax. Um You know what I also love is you're very open about like your your D. M. Activity. So you know it seems like it goes down in the D. M. So uh okay for someone who is not as um eloquent about like sliding in the guy's Dm like what's what's a good opener? How would you suggest someone slide into someone's Dm? It depends on what you want. I mean if I just want to go straight to the point, I just say it hi where can I see you? Uh Yeah that take me out, we don't need to take out let's meet someone to just do whatever you want to do. You know depends or if you know if you want to have like a date or something and if you want to get to know the person then you can start just talking high just say hi and start a conversation. But it's really I don't know it's just natural, it depends like if I see someone that I just want to go straight to the point, I say hi, I want to see you blah blah blah. And isn't that so when you know, but if I want to have a date, I just say hi, I want to have a day. We've also made some pretty famous friends and you know, you've made some collaborations through DM who are some of your collapsed friends, artists, maybe people that you admire that you've met through social media, Malou, MMA, J balvin, DJ snake. Um also will I am, which pointed out to me, uh sound together? Who else? Uh I got so many people actually, most of the people...

I've collaborated was like that uh Cardi B uh what was does Cardi B like her messages? Like when I when I think of Cardi B, her voice is just so iconic, right? So I wonder does she like message the same way? Do you hear her voice when she's messaging you through? D. M. Yeah it's very funny. This amazing. I love her. Uh Nice. Uh Well you've also been super busy obviously like you have furioso which just came out off of the fast and the furious soundtrack. So that was amazing. I'm busy anymore, I'm not busy anymore, I'm not working that much anymore and I'm having I'm taking time for myself. Nice! Where are you? Are you in Miami where you have a house here? I have a house, you can stay here for now. So what do you do for fun? I go out a lot. I hang out with my friends like when I'm in brazil I cannot get I cannot go out that much. Like I go out but it's a lot of people on me every time people are not that used to see famous people so much. So when I go out I want to make sure I'm in a good mood To treat everyone well. I don't like going out and if someone asked me for a picture, I don't like saying no, I don't like not the idea of not being nice to offend it comes to me. So I only leave my house if I'm nice to talk to 100,000 people if they come to talk to me. So I don't, I don't go out every night or every week in brazil. I try to only when I'm very prying with myself. Here I go a little bit more. I go to dinners uh in brazil what I love to do, I have my whole family there. So every week we have a movie session in my house or my family. That's my favorite thing to do when I'm, when I'm in brazil have movie sessions in my house here. I like going, I like going to strip clubs. I like going to the clubs and get crazy drunk and dance. Or sometimes I don't drink, but it just dance until the morning. I like doing that. Well, Miami is definitely the perfect place for that. I love that. Oh my God, it is. I should, I should, I should move a little bit to stop. I'm always in my life to while I mean do it now while you can because like, you know, in the 40 years from now, when you look back, like you're going to be like I lived my Yeah, exactly. I was just in a pandemic, you know, maybe I was just trying to put together all these times and always, yeah, you're making up for lost time, luckily. Uh well you inspire so many people, so who inspires you? Um Mariah Carey is my number one inspiration in life. I love her just like wing on everything and it's crazy because nowadays we talk really are you just like texting Mariah Carey? Yeah, it's crazy. That's amazing. I love that. What is Mariah saying? Like what do you, what do you talk about with Mariah Carey? She's the vast, she's just, she took me out of her one day of depressing cry and the bad and she just gave me the best advice and I was like oh my God that's everything I needed to hear from someone and like from her it's even like four. She changed my, my night my life, I told her this, it's crazy. She's my number one person for sure and also my family. I know it's kind of appreciated say that but my mom, my aunties, I grew up with all of them. I think Brazilian culture is a little bit different from american culture. I don't see american families like that they're attached. I don't know if I could be wrong, right? I don't know. Um But from the friends that I have, I don't see them being...

...like best friends with my mom, I'm like my dad and my best friend I called, my dad would be yo I met this guy blah blah blah yo mom I had a crazy night, I got drunk, I don't remember hanging over like business. Um I tell details of my life to my parents and my aunties and my uncles and so they are very simple and I love that they don't care about money, they don't care about what they have, they just care about being together and love each other. So that's my number one thing in life I can have the biggest success in my life. But I I want to still have that mindset of my family that if you don't have it's fine. It's okay. We have each other. It's okay. One last question and then I'll let you go live your best life over there in Miami. A question I'd like to ask. If we were to get into a time machine and we were to go forward five years. Where do you think you'll be? And what do you think you'll be doing? How I want to be chilled marriage with kids And in the middle of nowhere in the forest maybe in the island or so they isolated. Really? You want to live off the grid. Like nothing. You just you your family and nothing else. Yes. That's my dream life. Nice. Well, I mean 100%. That's living so hard right now. I was gonna say I was gonna say that's why you're partying so hard. You're saving up for that future. 100%. Uh Well it's so nice to talk to you, thank you so much for hanging out with us today.
